Summary
Origins
- Lateral femoral condyle
- Lateral meniscus via the popliteus tendon
Insertions
- Posterior surface of the proximal 🦴 tibia above the soleal line
Actions
- Unlocks the knee by medially rotating the 🦴 tibia on the femur
- Assists knee flexion
The popliteus is a thin triangular muscle at the back of the knee. It unlocks the joint by medially rotating the tibia on the femur and pulls the lateral meniscus posteriorly, preventing it from being pinched during flexion.
